June 6, 2022 - Reinstallation of MFAH Galleries for European Art
A major new reinstallation of 11 galleries for European art spans the Middle Ages through the 18th century, with art from northern and southern Europe as well as Central and South America. The interdisciplinary presentation features paintings, tapestries, sculpture, liturgical objects, and antiquities.

The MFAH has acquired a major, rediscovered painting by the great Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. La Bordadora (The Embroiderer) has not previously been on public view.

February 9, 2022 - The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to Create New Galleries for Art of the Islamic Worlds, Slated to Open in Early 2023
New galleries devoted to art from historic Islamic lands open in early 2023, more than doubling the Museum’s current gallery space to comprise one of the largest permanent displays for Islamic art in the United States.

November 9, 2021 - Sculptor Joseph Havel to Retire as Director, the Glassell School of Art
Joseph Havel will retire as director of the Glassell School of Art of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, effective June 30, 2022. Havel will return full-time to his studio, following 30 years as head of the Museum’s renowned art school.
