Overview
In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, presents Shooting the Moon: Photographs from the Museum’s Collection 50 Years after Apollo 11. The installation features 40 photographs ranging from documentary images of NASA’s mission to the moon to fanciful pictures including a 19th-century portrait of a man in a solar-themed costume. Notable works include Ansel Adams’s Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico; Hitoshi Nomura’s ‘moon score,’ December 19, 1975, representing an intersection of Conceptual art and stargazing; and Cortis and Sonderegger’s re-creation of Buzz Aldrin’s first footprint on the moon.

Babies and toddlers up to 35 months old, and their caregivers, are invited to discover and create. Guests are encouraged to make their own works of art using washable, nontoxic materials. The event concludes with a visit to the galleries to see the work of art that inspired the day’s program. $8 per child, $6 per child for MFAH members. Adults can attend for free with general admission.

Summer Festival: Celebrating the Moon
Saturday, July 20, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
In the spirit of community and collaboration, join the Museum in celebrating the lunar landing at this summer festival in the Museum’s outdoor spaces—The Brown Foundation, Inc. Plaza and the Cullen Sculpture Garden. The event includes musical performances, art-making, and more. All activities are free. Admission to the Museum and exhibition is available separately.

MFAH Playdate | “Moon + Art”
Tuesday, July 30, 10:45 to 11:15 a.m.
Children up to 35 months old, and an adult caregiver, are invited to enjoy a multi-sensory experience in the galleries. Families sing songs, listen to storybooks, and participate in fun games and activities, all while being introduced to ideas and themes found in art, such as color, size, and texture. Free with general admission and for ages 12 and younger.

MFAH Mixed Media
Friday, August 2, 8 p.m. to midnight
Join the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, for a “Space City”–themed MFAH Mixed Media party highlighting two summer exhibitions: Shooting the Moon and The Visitors. Guests enjoy musical performances, exclusive access to the exhibitions, art-making, and specialty cocktails and food items. Tickets are $25 ($22 for MFAH members) at mfah.org/mixedmedia

Little Artists | “Discovering Surfaces!”
Friday and Saturday, August 4 and 5, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Children ages 3 to 5, and an adult caretaker, are invited to experience an exciting art adventure at the Museum. Participants learn about the materials and processes artists used to create different works of art in the exhibition. This program includes a storybook circle, multisensory play, materials exploration, and making an art project in the studio. The morning concludes with an educator-led conversation in the galleries. $8 per child, $6 per child for MFAH members. Adults can attend for free with general admission.
