“Miss Ima Hogg & Modernism”

Title
Miss Ima Hogg & Modernism

Dates
July 27–November 3, 2019

Overview
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, presents Miss Ima Hogg & Modernism. The exhibition features some 50 works from the Museum’s permanent collection.

Miss Ima Hogg is best known for her collection of early American decorative arts and paintings, which she donated to the MFAH, along with her home, as Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens in 1957. However, prior to this, Miss Hogg made a less-known but significant gift to the Museum of early 20th-century modern European and North American prints and drawings. This exhibition marks the 80th anniversary of Miss Hogg’s first significant gift of early 20th-century works on paper in 1939 to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston—a donation that she would continue throughout the next decade.

The Museum will showcase a selection of these works on paper. Miss Hogg was one of the first American collectors of Modern art in Texas when avant-garde art was still generally misunderstood. Over the course of her travels, she amassed an important collection of over 100 prints and drawings by artists such as Pablo Picasso, José Clemente Orozco, George Bellows, Paul Klee, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Jack Hokeah, and Rockwell Kent.
