Title
American Modern: Works from the Collection of Alice C. Simkins

Dates
April 16–July 19, 2015

Overview
American Modern: Works from the Collection of Alice C. Simkins surveys the brilliant innovations American artists brought forward in the first decades of the 20th century. This tightly focused exhibition features 17 works on paper by Oscar Bluemner, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe, Joseph Stella, Helen Torr, and Max Weber, among others. Also included are sculptures by Dorothy Austin and William Zorach.

Trained as an art historian and museum professional, Alice C. Simkins is a leading supporter of the arts in San Antonio and Houston. She first began collecting in the mid-1970s and has consistently brought a scholar’s eye to this project across four decades, seeking out examples that illuminate the most innovative moments in artists’ careers.

Curated by Alison de Lima Greene, curator of contemporary art and special projects, the exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Following Houston, American Modern: Works from the Collection of Alice C. Simkins will travel to the McNay Art Museum, where it will be seen from September 30 to December 6, 2015.
