The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Les parapluies de Cherbourg) Sunday, December 22, 2024 2 p.m.-3:45 p.m.
Twenty-year-old Catherine Deneuve rose to stardom in this dazzling bittersweet musical from Jacques Demy. She plays an umbrella-shop owner’s delicate daughter, glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic (Nino Castelnuovo). When he is sent to fight in Algeria, the two pledge their hearts to each other, but this true love succumbs to the stark realities of life and unexpected consequences. Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colors, and told entirely through the lilting songs of the great composer Michel Legrand, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time.
