A Thousand Cuts brings to light the ongoing conflict between the free press and Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, through the lens of former CNN bureau chief Maria Ressa. Founder of digital news site Rappler, Ressa has published numerous investigative pieces about Duterte, his administration, and their response to the war on drugs. These reports resulted in intimidation tactics by the government, including threats via social media, bots spreading disinformation, and Ressa’s arrest on cyber libel charges in February 2019.
