June is Pride Month, an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the history and achievements of the LGBTQ community. MFAH Virtual Cinema is proud join the salute with two new documentaries.
Truman & Tennessee: An Intimate Conversation
Opens June 18
This revelatory film looks at the enduring friendship between legendary writers Truman Capote (1924–1984) and Tennessee Williams (1911–1983). Both openly gay, they lived parallel lives and struggled to balance creativity and self-doubt with success. Filmed as “an encounter between two lifelong friends in their own words,” the film creatively uses the voices of actors Jim Parsons (as Capote) and Zachary Quinto (as Williams).

Against the Current
Opens June 25
Follow the journey of Veiga Grétarsdóttir, the first woman in the world to attempt to kayak more than 1,200 miles around Iceland—counterclockwise and “against the current.” The trip is presented alongside her decision to have gender-reassignment surgery, transitioning from male to female. These two stories of conflict and struggle are intertwined over the amazing 103-day trek, with the magical, rugged coastline a backdrop to the story of her transition.

Reel Pride
On June 12, “Night Out at the Movies: A Reel Pride Pop-Up” includes the premiere of the documentary Ailey. The annual Reel Pride film festival is part of the City of Houston’s Pride Houston celebration, which has been rescheduled for fall 2021. Visit www.pridehouston.org for updates.
QFest
