See the City through the Eyes of Teens in “Eye on Houston” July 5, 2020

View Houston from a new angle—through the eyes of the city’s teenagers. Now in its 25th year, the exhibition Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography continues to chronicle and celebrate Houston’s diverse neighborhoods.

Perspectives
Every year, the MFAH invites students from the Houston Independent School District to document their perspectives, using photography as their medium, and explore themes like movement, home, cultures, family, and coming of age.

Experiences
From more than 1,000 submissions, this year’s compilation of 100 photographs features work by freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior photographers. The compelling images speak to common experiences in Houston, the coming together of community, the city’s diversity, and youth. Each work by these local high school students provides a window into their daily lives, experiences, and personal stories.

Schools
The annual Eye on Houston exhibition is a collaboration between the Museum and HISD high schools. This year’s 11 participating schools are Bellaire High School, Carnegie Vanguard High School, César E. Chavez High School, DeBakey High School for Health Professions, Eastwood Academy, Furr High School, Jane Long Academy, Sharpstown High School, Westbury High School, Westside High School, and Jack Yates High School.

Visits
Timed, general admission tickets are available online for Eye on Houston: High School Documentary Photography, and admission is free on Thursdays. The exhibition is on view through January 3.
