Glassell-on-the-Go Brings a World of Art to Houston-Area Students July 24, 2017
Glassell-on-the-Go takes the esteemed youth-art classes of the Museum’s Glassell Junior School into the surrounding Houston community. Our teaching artists and faculty bring mobile art classes to schools and community centers, encouraging students to create works of art using high-quality materials and tools.
This program, which lasts 24 weeks, offers students a way to slow down and practice making careful observations. Glassell-on-the-Go teaches techniques and processes that help students create original art inspired by the Museum’s collections. At the end of the school year, participating students and their families visit the MFAH to explore the galleries and make works of art in the studio together.
Glassell-on-the-Go just completed its second year! You can see art by students from the 2016–17 school year now, in a new MFAH exhibition that showcases a variety of materials and the new techniques they learned. The installation features work by middle school students from the African American Library at the Gregory School; the Carnegie Neighborhood Library and Center for Learning; and KIPP Voyage Academy for Girls.
Glassell-on-the-Go starts its third year this fall with four Houston Public Library branches—and we can’t wait to see what the young artists will do!
See “Glassell-on-the-Go” in the Kinder Foundation Education Center Gallery, located on the lower level of the Law Building, through December 31.
