Conversation with the Director: Gary Tinterow Talks with Artist David McGee August 9, 2020
The latest installment of “Conversations with the Director” delves into the exhibition Francis Bacon: Late Paintings. Artist David McGee joins MFAH director Gary Tinterow to discuss this landmark survey of works from the last 20 years of Francis Bacon’s career, 1971 to 1991.
Francis Bacon: Late Paintings gathers together some of Bacon’s most celebrated paintings. The exhibition conveys the timeless humanism and enduring power that made Bacon among the 20th century’s most compelling figures.
Houston-based artist David McGee was born in Louisiana, grew up in Detroit, and moved to Texas to study at Prairie View A&M University. His work draws on his interests in poetry, history painting, politics, race, class, pop culture, and their intersections. Ranging from the figurative to the abstract, McGee’s paintings, drawings, and prints can be found in collections across the nation, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Menil Collection; and the Museum of Arts, Boston.
