March 4, 2024 - The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Appoints Daniel Kurt Ackermann Director of Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens
Daniel Kurt Ackermann has been named director of Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, the historic MFAH house museum for American decorative arts. He begins his appointment in July.

February 6, 2024 - The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, installs “Portal” by Do Ho Suh, an “impossible” sculpture made from the negative form of a traditional Korean gate
Do Ho Suh’s Portal is installed alongside two other major works commissioned for the opening of the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building: Ólafur Elíasson’s Sometimes an underground movement is an illuminated bridge and Ai Weiwei’s Dragon Reflection.

December 4, 2023 - Simone Leigh’s Monumental Bronze Sculpture “Satellite” Is Installed at the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building of the MFAH
Simone Leigh’s towering, 24-foot-high bronze Satellite (2022) has been installed at the MFAH near the entry plaza of the Nancy and Rich Kinder Building for modern and contemporary art. The first edition of Satellite was the centerpiece of Leigh’s project for the American Pavilion of the 59th Venice Biennale.

November 2, 2023 - MFAH Establishes a Gallery for Judaica, Opening December 3, 2023
The new space allows for a permanent presence at the Museum for works of art made for Jewish communities around the world to fulfill the practice of their faith. More than two dozen objects will be displayed in the inaugural installation, primarily from a group of recent acquisitions that have launched this new collecting initiative.

April 17, 2023 - Director Bonnie Campbell to Retire from Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens in September 2023
Bonnie Campbell, who has headed Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens since 2004, will retire as of September 30.

January 23, 2023 - MFAH Opens New Galleries for Art of the Islamic Worlds on March 5
Building upon a historic, decade-long collaboration with the renowned al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will mark the 10th anniversary of that initiative by opening new, permanent galleries for Art of the Islamic Worlds on March 5, 2023. These new galleries have been endowed by collector Hossein Afshar.

November 21, 2022 - The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Announces Partnership with the Sarofim Foundation
Masterworks from the distinguished collection of the late Houston philanthropist Fayez S. Sarofim will be placed on extended loan to the MFAH beginning in early 2023, in a collaboration between the museum and the Sarofim Foundation.

June 22, 2022 - The MFAH Appoints Paul Coffey Director of the Glassell School of Art
Paul Coffey, vice provost and dean of community engagement at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, has been named director of the Glassell School of Art at the MFAH. He joins the MFAH on July 18, succeeding retiring director Joseph Havel.

June 13, 2022 - Ernie Barnes’s “The Sugar Shack” Goes on View at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, June 15
Houston collector Bill Perkins, who acquired the iconic 1976 painting The Sugar Shack at auction last month, has placed the work with the MFAH through December.

The MFAH and The Jewish Museum, New York, announce a partnership to establish an ongoing presence for Judaica in Houston, beginning in July 2022 with the MFAH exhibition Beauty and Ritual: Judaica from The Jewish Museum, New York.
