Learn how to embellish your own manuscripts in gold, lapis lazuli, and other pigments. Tazhib, the art of illumination, has been used in the Muslim world for over a millenium to enhance the beauty of the calligraphic and painted page with intricate naturalistic and geometric patterns. In this workshop, participants create their own artworks after a historical introduction to the materials and techniques by artist Behnaz Karjoo.
This program is presented in partnership with Reed Society for the Sacred Arts. It accompanies the special installation Sea of Ink, Forest of Pens: The Art of the Qur'an in the Hossein Afshar Collection, on view in the Hossein Afshar Galleries for Art of the Islamic Worlds through June 21, 2026.
The workshop is open to art enthusiasts of ages 15+. Materials are provided. No prior experience is required.

About the Presenter
Behnaz Karjoo studied jewelry design and photography at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She earned her ijazah, a certificate of mastery in illumination, in 2016 under Mujgan Baskoylu, a distinguished master in Turkish illumination. Her works have been exhibited in San Francisco, New York, Istanbul, Kuwait, and Sharjah.
