Virtual Cinema “Diana Kennedy: Nothing Fancy” and “On a Magical Night” May 25, 2020
This week, Virtual Cinema brings you two new releases with two feisty female leads. Travel to Michoacán, Mexico, for a lesson in Mexican cuisine with Diana Kennedy, and then to Paris with Chiara Mastroianni.
► Diana Kennedy: Nothing Fancy
“Ms. Kennedy is, by reputation, ferocious. Brilliant. Direct. Uncompromising.” —New York Times
Nothing Fancy offers an intimate portrait of Diana Kennedy, widely regarded as “the” expert on Mexican cuisine. Falling in love with Mexican food more than 60 years ago, the British-born cook relocated to the country and documented regional recipes. The film unfolds through extensive interviews with Kennedy and her contemporaries—chefs José Andrés, Rick Bayless, Gabriela Cámara, Alice Waters—taking you on a zesty journey. The 97-year-old’s career has produced two James Beard Awards, nine cookbooks, and recognition as the “Julia Child of Mexico”—although her preference is the “Mick Jagger of Mexican food.”

“A whimsical comic romp” —Hollywood Reporter
On a Magical Night follows Maria (Chiara Mastroianni), a Parisian woman dissatisfied with her marriage of 20 years. After a heated argument with her husband, Maria escapes to Room 212 at the hotel across the street from their home—a bird’s eye view of her husband and their marriage. During this delightful film from writer and director Christophe Honoré, Maria confronts past lovers and relationships, fantasizing about the life she could have lived and wondering if she’s made the right decisions.
