Two exhibitions open this week at the Glassell School of Art: Rewrite the World, curated through the school’s Core Residency Program; and the internationally touring Steven Holl: Making Architecture.

Rewrite the World highlights multi-generational U.S.-based artists who explore how language can be used as a tool for education that liberates. Highlighting the work of artists who have engaged with histories of struggle and social change from the 1970s to today—Jamal Cyrus, Demian DinéYazhi’, Newton and Helen Harrison, and Cecilia Vicuña—the exhibition takes its title from the ideas of Brazilian philosopher Paulo Freire, who regarded the world as a “reality in process.” Rewrite the World is curated by Ana Tuazon, a writer and independent curator in residence with the Core Program.

Steven Holl: Making Architecture reveals the intricate and distinctive process of architect Steven Holl, from project genesis to completion. Showcasing 17 recent projects, among them the Glassell School of Art itself and the newly opened Nancy and Rich Kinder Building at the MFAH, Making Architecture takes viewers through the “Thinking,” “Building,” and “Reflecting” steps behind Holl’s innovative architectural endeavors.
